Medical care at the highest level
The Flugfeldklinikum is a flagship project in the district of Böblingen, which will be part of local medical care in the future.
As an inter-municipal joint project, Sindelfingen and Böblingen are currently developing the Flugfeld district, which at around 80 hectares is already one of the largest urban development projects in south-west Germany. By 2025, 4,000 residents are expected to settle here and 7,000 jobs will be created. The flagship project and largest employer on the airfield with 2,200 jobs will be Klinikverbund Südwest (KVSW). KVSW is one of the largest and most efficient municipal healthcare facilities in southern Germany. Around 6,000 employees from more than 70 nations and 125 professional groups offer not only basic and standard care at several locations, but also the treatment of complex illnesses in highly specialized centers.
In operation from 2026: this is what the Flugfeldklinkum will look like
The future Flugfeldklinikum will be created through the merger of the Sindelfingen and Böblingen clinics. The hospital currently under construction on the airfield in Böblingen will then become part of a local medical care system. The costs for this mammoth project amount to more than half a billion euros. The DRK district association, the Medicum health center, the DHV dialysis center and the "Domizil am See" retirement and care center are already located in the immediate vicinity of the construction site. The new Flugfeldklinikum will complete this healthcare offering.
The new building should be ready for occupancy by 2026 and will then have around 700 beds. The modern clinic will then ensure high-performance and future-oriented healthcare, which was previously covered by the hospitals in Böblingen and Sindelfingen. However, these facilities have now reached their capacity limits. The Flugfeldklinikum concept also ensures that the other KVSW locations in Leonberg and Herrenberg will be maintained to provide basic and emergency care close to home. The district is investing another 130 million euros in these locations.
Digital building information modeling makes a virtual tour of the Flugfeldklinikum possible
Virtual tours of the Flugfeldklinikum
Construction of the Flugfeldklinikum is already in full swing. Computer-aided digital Building Information Modeling (BIM) is being used for planning and construction, which, among other things, enables a greater level of detail and better cooperation between the individual trades. BIM makes it possible for future visitors to take virtual tours of Flugfeldklinikum today, for example through the central emergency department, the gynaecology department or the operating theatre. For non-medical functions of the hospital such as administration, training centers and classrooms, a high point will be built on the neighboring property to the east of the hospital. This is intended to create scope for potential future medical developments in the core building.
